God-wise, blessed old lady Matrona,/ the prosperity of the land of Tula/ and the glorious adornment of the city of Moscow,/ let us praise today, faithful ones./ For this, having not known the light of day,/ Enlightened by the light of Christ/ and enriched with the gift of insight and healing./ The solitary and wanderer who was on earth/ now stands before the Throne of God in the heavenly chambers// and prays for souls ours.

Matrona Dimitrievna Nikonova was born in 1881 in the village of Sebino, Tula province, into a God-fearing peasant family. This village is located twenty kilometers from Kulikovo Field. Being blind from birth, Matrona from her infancy received from God the gift of spiritual vision, penetration into the secrets of God's Providence. The grace that rested on her manifested itself in the gifts of prayer, spiritual reasoning, knowledge, and insight. People began to turn to her for advice early on - first by local residents, and then by visitors from other regions. At the age of seventeen, Matronushka suddenly lost her legs and lost the ability to walk forever; however, she never grumbled because of her illnesses, humbly bearing the cross given to her by God.
In 1925, Matrona left for Moscow, which became the place of her ascetic service and righteous death. Persecuted by atheists, Matrona was forced to constantly change her place of residence, finding shelter in the houses of believers. An endless stream of people came to Matronushka, thirsting for spiritual healing, guidance, and prayerful help. Through her prayers, the weak, the paralyzed, and those suffering from mental and physical illnesses were healed. Her prophecies and predictions helped many people avoid danger and death, and find the right path in difficult circumstances. Numerous testimonies of these miraculous events have survived to this day.
After her righteous death, which followed in 1952, many people came to Matrona’s grave at the Danilovskoye cemetery, veneration for the deceased grew, miracles and healings were performed. In 1999, by the determination of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', Elder Matrona of Moscow was canonized as the righteous for local church veneration in Moscow and the Moscow diocese. The venerable relics of the blessed one rest in the Intercession Stauropegial Convent of the City of Moscow.
