The World Congress of Syriac Studies adopted a declaration recognizing Romania's contribution to cultural diplomacytranslated

The participants of the World Congress of Syriac Studies and the International Conference of Arab Christian Studies adopted on Friday the "Declaration of Bucharest", a document that recognizes Romania's contribution to the development of cultural diplomacy.

According to a press release sent by the Levant Institute for Advanced Studies for the Culture of Peace, the declaration was adopted in the context of "geopolitical transformations in the Middle East, new opportunities for international cooperation and developments that can facilitate the resumption of research, conservation and restoration programs."

The signatories of the document emphasized that "manuscripts, libraries, monasteries, churches, murals, icons and liturgical objects constitute exceptional testimonies of a tradition that continues to inspire scientific research and intercultural dialogue".

"Protecting Syrian and Christian Arab heritage is not only an obligation to the past, but also an investment in the future of dialogue between peoples, of peace and mutual respect," the document also states.

It's good to see the Declaration of Bucharest actually name the manuscripts, murals, and icons as the real heart of this work. Romania's had a quiet hand in preserving those kinds of things for years, especially through the institutes here. Hope the new cooperation they mention leads to some concrete restoration projects and not just more meetings.
