Emily AdamsInteresting to see the Coptic monks visiting Nizhny Novgorod. Wonder what their monasteries are like compared to ours.
G
George CollinsI remember reading once that Coptic monasteries in the Egyptian desert still keep some of the oldest continuous monastic traditions. It’ll be interesting to hear what the guys from our choir think after they meet them.
L
Laura ClarkTheir monasteries in the Egyptian desert are much simpler and more austere than what we have here. I remember reading how some of the Coptic monks still live in caves like the early fathers. Have you ever visited any of the monasteries around Nizhny yourself, Emily?
G
Gregory TaylorYeah, those desert caves sound pretty raw compared to our Russian ones. I visited the Diveyevo monastery last summer with my wife and our little one — the simplicity there hit me harder than I expected, especially walking the canal at dawn. Have you been to any Coptic spots yourself, Laura?
E
Emily BrownThe Diveyevo canal at dawn does stay with you, doesn’t it? I’ve never made it to any Coptic monasteries, but the stories about those desert caves always make me think how different the heat and isolation must feel from our northern woods. Did your little one manage the whole walk or did you end up carrying her partway?
