Cyprus reinstates the annual sponsorship to the Patriarchate of Alexandriatranslated

The restoration of annual sponsorship on a permanent basis to support the work of the Patriarchate of Alexandria was announced on Thursday morning by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Konstantinos Kombos, in his statements after the meeting of the Council of Ministers. Mr. Kombos stated that the decision of the Council of Ministers concerns the granting of an amount of €75,000 per year from a fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Responding to a journalist's question, if the Government received any request from the Patriarchate or the expatriate community there to grant support, Mr. Kombos replied that support was given in the past, but was stopped in 2013 due to the financial crisis.

"We are coming to restore this support on a permanent basis, because the role of the Patriarchate is indeed evaluated as extremely important," he added. He stated that "the Patriarchate of Alexandria has a historical course of more than 2000 years in Egypt and Africa and contributes decisively to the preservation of the Orthodox faith, while at the same time carrying out missionary work in these regions", as well as that "it also plays an important role in the effort to keep the link of diaspora Hellenism with its roots, history and culture...
