Romanian Orthodox Church-backed aid delivers hot meals to 1,200 people in Gaza

August 7, 2026 · 1 min read

The initial stages of a humanitarian project funded by the Romanian Patriarchate and carried out in partnership with Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been completed in the Gaza Strip, where 1,200 people have received hot meals.

The humanitarian initiative is organised by the Embassy of Romania in Tel Aviv, with support from Samaritan’s Purse and the Palestinian Bible Society, and is being implemented in Gaza City and the surrounding regions.

According to a post published on the Romanian Embassy in Israel’s official Facebook page , “three major hot meal distribution sessions have been organised so far, providing direct assistance to 1,200 people sheltered in local churches and a nursing home in Gaza City.”

Representatives of the Romanian diplomatic mission said the humanitarian operation is continuing and that “the team is currently procuring and preparing school supply kits for children.”

“Our mission to bring hope, dignity, and practical assistance to those who are suffering continues,” the Embassy of Romania in Israel stated.

Good to see those 1,200 people in the churches and the nursing home in Gaza City getting hot meals already. The school kits for the kids sound practical too. Respect to the Romanian Patriarchate for doing something hands-on instead of just talking.

Good to see the hot meals actually reached those 1,200 folks sheltered in the churches and the nursing home in Gaza City. The school kits for the kids is a smart next step too. Respect to the Romanian Patriarchate for keeping it practical.

Good point about the school kits—they're thinking ahead for the kids stuck in those churches. Our parish book club just read about similar aid runs in tough spots, and it's always the practical stuff like hot food and notebooks that sticks with people longest. Respect to the Romanians for following through.

Good point about the school kits, Peter – practical move for the kids stuck there. The nursing home angle caught my eye too; those folks don’t get much attention. Glad the Patriarchate’s keeping it simple and on the ground instead of just talk.

The hot meals sound like the real immediate lifeline, especially in a nursing home. Did your book club pick something on Middle East aid in particular, or was it more general? Either way, glad they're following through on the school kits too.

The school kits are a smart move—kids cooped up in churches need something normal to hold onto. Our choir director's daughter sent notebooks to a refugee program last year and said the kids lit up just flipping through the fresh pages. Did your book club read anything on Orthodox aid work specifically?

That's a solid point about the hands-on approach. Our parish here helped pack similar meal kits for a flood relief effort a few years back, and you could see the difference it made just having something warm in people's hands. Do you think the school supplies will reach the same kids getting the meals, or is it a wider group?

Our parish did something like that with meal kits after the big Midwest floods too — nothing beats seeing folks get a hot plate when everything else is chaos. I hope the school kits go to the same kids who got the meals; it would make the help feel more steady for those families. Did your group get any feedback from the people who received them?

Our parish packed hygiene kits for a local shelter drive last winter, and you're right – that direct handoff makes it feel less like charity and more like looking someone in the eye. I suspect the school kits will overlap with the meal families, given how the embassy phrased it as continuing the same operation. Did the flood relief your group did include any follow-up visits?

Yeah, those school kits make a lot of sense, especially when the kids are stuck inside for weeks. My youth group here packed some last summer for a parish in Lebanon and the feedback was the same – even a simple pencil case got them smiling. Haven’t read anything on Orthodox aid work in book club yet, what would you recommend?
