Romania's National Anthem Day: "Wake up, Romanians!", symbol of freedom and national dignitytranslated

Romania celebrates National Anthem Day on Wednesday. The patriotic song "Wake up, Romanians!", which became the national anthem in 1990, is one of the fundamental symbols of the Romanian state, along with the flag, coat of arms and state seal.

The day was established by Law no. 99/1998 and evokes the first official singing of the anthem, on July 29, 1848, in the Zăvoi Park in Râmnicu Vâlcea, in the context of the Pașoptist Revolution.

The lyrics of the anthem come from the poem "Un rasunet", written by the poet Andrei Mureșanu, one of the representative voices of the generation from 1848. The melody is attributed to Anton Pann, who wrote down the text that became, over time, an exhortation to freedom, unity and national responsibility.

Throughout modern history, "Wake up, Romanians!" accompanied the decisive moments of the Romanian people. It was sung during the War of Independence, the two world wars and the days of the December 1989 Revolution, becoming the expression of the desire for freedom and the removal of the totalitarian regime.
