August 7, 1964: Turkey carried out its first military intervention in Cyprus by indiscriminately bombing the area of Tellyria with napalm bombs. Dozens dead and hundreds injured, many of them civilians. It was preceded by the creation of a military bridgehead in the area of ​​Kokkino - Masoura. The political goal was to create a large canton, which would later be united with that of Nicosia - Kioneli to enforce the partition. The occupation by armed Turks of strategically important heights around the Red bridgehead caused a counterattack by the forces of the Republic to limit the bridgehead.

Addressing all heads of state, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, telegraphed:

Πάντα με στεναχωρεί όταν διαβάζω για τα ναπάλμ στην Τηλλυρία. Θυμάμαι που μου είχε πει η γειτόνισσα η Ελένη από την Κύπρο ότι έκαιγαν τα χωράφια και τα σπίτια μαζί με τους ανθρώπους. Ο Μακάριος έκανε καλά που το έστειλε το τηλεγράφημα εκείνη τη μέρα, τουλάχιστον να μάθει ο κόσμος τι έγινε.
