The Holy Diocese of Maroneia and Komotini issued its message for St. Matthew's Sunday, August 2, 2026, in which it emphasizes that "by ceasing to look at Christ in our lives, we close ourselves off." The message in detail:

A typical alternation of boldness and fear, trust and hesitation is presented by the adventure of the apostle Peter in the turbulent sea of Gennesaret, which describes today's Gospel reading.  It is a typically human psychology that helps us to understand something more than our spiritual personal adventure. The first part of the passage is a phase of spontaneous faith. The Apostle Peter, flooded with devotion and trust, asks to come to Christ as soon as possible. Lord, if it is You, then command me to come to You on the waters. Then Peter's thoughts were fixed on Christ.

It is interesting how the author emphasizes the moment when Peter stops looking at Christ and focuses on the waves. It happens to me too - as soon as I look away from prayer during the day, I immediately become anxious. Thanks for the reminder that this is a classic human reaction.
