Holy Apostles: The Temple – Symbol of Kalamatatranslated

August 5, 2026 · 1 min read

In the heart of Kalamata is the historic Church of the Holy Apostles, one of the most important Byzantine monuments of the city and a symbol of the Greek Revolution. Here, on March 23, 1821, after the liberation of Kalamata, the solemn eulogy was held in the presence of Theodoros Kolokotronis, Petrobeis Mavromichalis, Nikitaras, Papaflessas and other fighters, while according to tradition the revolutionary flag was also blessed. The Archdeacon of the Holy Metropolis of Messinia, Fr. Filippos Hamargias, and the Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi Velanidia, Archimandrite Christophoros Damatis, speak about the history and importance of the church.
