Crosses with crowns

The yellow-blue building of the Holy Assumption Cathedral in Makhachkala seems to be hidden from prying eyes. You won’t immediately notice it from the road, despite the blue domes and golden crosses. The temple is located in the old district of the capital of Dagestan, where the village of Petrovsk-Kavkazsky was once located - the townspeople also call this place “First Makhachkala”, or “Pervukha”.

In 1890, a small wooden church was built here, but the number of believers was so large that there was simply not enough space for everyone. In 1905, a decision was made to build a large stone church. Unfortunately, the name of the architect has not been preserved. “Father Afanasy Alibekov was sent here, who began collecting funds, searching for workers and materials,” says Anastasia Viter, head of the pilgrimage service of the Makhachkala diocese “Caucasus - Home of Peace.” Money was collected by the whole world. The royal family made a great contribution, donating a thousand gold rubles. — The grateful residents of the city did not forget the generous royal gesture. If you look at our crosses, you will see an image of a crown - this indicates that the royal family took part in the construction of the temple,” explains Anastasia.…
