About the ejection of lower clerics entering into secular positions of authority.
Elders or deacons who assume temporal positions of authority or care or the title of stewards in the houses of rulers have the divine and sacred rules cast out. So, confirming this, we also make a determination regarding all others enrolled in the clergy: if any of them occupy temporal positions of authority or take upon themselves the title of stewards in the houses or country estates of superiors, he should be expelled from the clergy. No one can, according to the false word of Christ Himself, our true God, work for two masters (Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:13).

Τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους ἢ διακόνους, κοσμικὰς ἀρχὰς ἢ φροντίδας ἀναδεχομένους ἢ τὰς ἐν τοῖς οἴκοις τῶν ἀρχόντων λεγομένας κουρατωρείας, οἱ θεῖοι καὶ ἱεροὶ κανόνες καθαιρέσει καθυποβάλλουσι. Τοῦτο οὖν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐπικυροῦντες, καὶ περὶ τῶν λοιπῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ κλήρῳ κατειλεγμένων διοριζόμεθα, ὡς, εἴ τις αὐτῶν κοσμικὰς ἀρχὰς μεταχειρίζοιτο, ἢ τὰς ἐν τοῖς τῶν ἀρχόντων οἴκοις ἢ προαστείοις λεγομένας κουρατωρείας ἀναδέχοιτο, τοῦτον τοῦ οἰκείου κλήρου ἐκδιώκεσθαι· οὐδεὶς γὰρ δύναται, κατὰ τὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ ἀληθινοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν αὐτόλεκτον καὶ ἀψευδεστάτην φωνήν, δυσὶ κυρίοις δουλεύειν.
