One cannot arrogantly and rashly appoint a bishop, presbyter or deacon: neither learning nor good behavior can allow this. After all, otherwise he should have been considered a convert, especially since the most blessed apostle, who became a teacher of the pagans, clearly forbade quick orders. Ὅσιος ἐπίσκοπος εἶπεν· Καὶ τοῦτο ἀναγκαῖον εἶναι νομίζω, ἵνα μετὰ πάσης ἀκριβείας καὶ ἐπιμελείας ἐξετάζοιτο, ὥστε ἐάν τις πλούσιος, ἢ σχολαστικὸς ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγορᾶς ἀξιοῖτο ἐπίσκοπος γίνεσθαι, μὴ πρότερον καθίστασθαι, ἐὰν μὴ καὶ ἀναγνώστου, καὶ διακόνου καὶ πρεσβυτέρου ὑπηρεσίαν ἐκτέλεσῃ, ἵνα καθ᾽ ἕκαστον βαθμόν, ἐάν περ ἄξιος νομισθείη, εἰς τὴν ἁψίδα τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς κατὰ προκοπὴν διαβῆναι δυνηθείη.
