All luxury and decoration of the body is alien to the priestly rank. Therefore, bishops or clergy who adorn themselves with lush and bright clothes must be corrected, but if they persist, they must be subjected to penance, as well as those who anoint themselves with fragrant ointments. Since the bitter root - the heresy of the blasphemers of Christianity, having arisen, became an unclean stain for the Catholic Church, and those who accepted it not only abhorred the iconographic images, but also rejected all reverence, being indignant at the holy and pious living, and what was written on them was fulfilled: Piety is hateful to the sinner (Sir. 1:25), then if there are those who mock those who dress in cheap and modest clothing, let the scoffers be corrected by penance. Since ancient times, every consecrated man has worn strict and modest clothing, because everything that is accepted not for the sake of necessity, but for decoration, is subject to accusations of vanity, as Basil the Great said. No one also put on multi-colored clothes made of silk fabrics (ἐκ σηρικῶν), and did not sew patches of a different color on the edges of the clothes, because they heard from the God-speaking tongue that those who wear soft clothes are in the royal palaces.
