On excluding the possibility of divorce at the request of one or even both spouses.
She who has left her husband is an adulteress if she marries another, according to the sacred and divine Basil, who very appropriately cited the following words from the prophecy of Jeremiah: “If she becomes a wife to another husband, let her not return to her husband, but being defiled, she will be defiled” (see Jer. 3:1), and also: he who contains an adulteress is foolish and wicked (Prov. 18:23). Therefore, if it turns out that the wife left her husband without reason, then he is worthy of leniency, and she is worthy of penance. Condescension will be shown to him in the fact that he can be in communion with the Church. But the one who leaves his wife, legally married to him, and brings another, is subject, according to the word of the Lord (Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9; Mark 10:11; Luke 16:18), to condemnation for adultery. The rules of our fathers established that such people should cry for a year, listen for 2 years, fall for 3 years and stand with the faithful for the 7th year and then be rewarded with communion of the Holy Mysteries, if, of course, they repent with tears.
