OAS council may seek emergency foreign‑ministers session over Nicaragua crackdown

August 6, 2026 · 1 min read

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) may summon hemispheric foreign ministers for an emergency session on Nicaragua after President Daniel Ortega’s vow to end elections and deepening concerns over crackdowns against the Catholic Church.

It’s a pity that again everything comes down to politics and resolutions, and almost nothing is said about churches and the priests who are imprisoned. The article directly states that the crackdown is happening specifically in the Church, and the title only says “Nicaragua crackdown.” I wonder whether this emergency meeting will be held before September 1 or postponed again.

I hope the OAS council really focuses on the priests and bishops who are putting prisoners in prison, as the article says, and not just on political resolutions. Ksenia is right, the title almost hides that the crackdown is against the Church. Do you think they are going to bring the meeting together before September 1 or is everything going to be diluted again?
