The World Council of Churches strongly condemns the reported drone strike on the Abbay Giyorgis St. Arsema Unity Monastery in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region on 22 July 2026.
The World Council of Churches strongly condemns the reported drone strike on the Abbay Giyorgis St. Arsema Unity Monastery in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region on 22 July 2026, which reportedly killed two civilians and injured several others, including women who had gathered to prepare food for a religious commemoration.
The reported attack on a place of worship and the killing and wounding of civilians is deeply disturbing and utterly unacceptable. Religious institutions and civilians must never be targeted or placed in the path of military operations. The continued violence and reported attacks on civilian communities and religious sites in the Amhara Region must end.
The World Council of Churches calls for an immediate, credible, transparent, and impartial investigation into this incident and for those responsible to be held accountable. All parties to the conflict must…
