About the position of housekeeper in the Church.
Since we are all obliged to observe divine rules, we must in every possible way keep unbreakable the rule that commands that there should be stewards in every church. And if every metropolitan supplies an economist in his church, that’s good; if not, then the Bishop of Constantinople has the right to appoint a steward to this church with his own authority. Metropolitans have the right to do the same if the bishops subordinate to them do not intend to install stewards in their churches. The same should be observed in monasteries.

Ὑπόχρεοι ὄντες πάντες τοὺς θείους κανόνας φυλάττειν, καὶ τὸν λέγοντα, οἰκονόμους εἶναι ἐν ἑκάστῃ ἐκκλησίᾳ, παντὶ τρόπῳ ἀπαράτρωτον διατηρεῖν ὀφείλομεν. Καὶ εἰ μὲν ἕκαστος μητροπολίτης ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ αὐτοῦ καθιστᾷ οἰκονόμον, καλῶς ἂν ἔχοι· εἰ δὲ μή γε ἐξ αὐθεντίας ἰδίας, τῷ Κωνσταντινουπόλεως ἐπισκόπῳ ἄδειά ἐστι προχειρίζεσθαι οἰκονόμον ἐν τῇ αὐτοῦ ἐκκλησίᾳ. Ὡσαύτως καὶ τοῖς μητροπολίταις, εἰ οἱ ὑπ᾿ αὐτοὺς ἐπίσκοποι οὐ προαιροῦνται οἰκονόμους ἐγκαταστῆσαι ἐν ταῖς ἑαυτῶν ἐκκλησίαις· τὸ αὐτὸ δε φυλάττεσθαι καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν μοναστηρίων.
