That foreign priests, if they abstain by consent from copulation with their spouses, should not have any communication with them at all.
Desiring to do everything for the building of the Church, we decided to make arrangements for the priests in the barbarian (βαρβαρικαῖς) Churches. Therefore, if they consider it their duty to exceed the apostolic rule that they should not cast out their wife under the pretext of reverence, and to do beyond what is specified in it, and, based on this, by agreement with their spouses, abstain from carnal intercourse with each other, then we determine that they will no longer cohabit with them under any circumstances, in order thereby to provide us with complete proof of their promise. We allowed this to happen to them not because of anything else but because of their cowardly thoughts, as well as their alien and unstable morals.

Πάντα πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν τῆς ἐκκλησίας βουλόμενοι διαπράττεσθαι, καὶ τοὺς ἐν ταῖς βαρβαρικαῖς ἐκκλησίαις ἱερέας οἰκονομεῖν διεγνώκαμεν· ὥστε, εἰ τὸν ἀποστολικὸν κανόνα, τὸν περὶ τοῦ προφάσει εὐλαβείας τὴν οἰκείαν γαμετὴν μὴ ἐκβάλλειν, ὑπεραναβαίνειν οἴονται δεῖν, καὶ πέραν τῶν ὁρισθέντων ποιεῖν, ἐκ τούτου τε μετὰ τῶν οἰκείων συμφωνοῦντες συμβίων, τῆς πρὸς ἀλλήλους ὁμιλίας ἀπέχονται· ὁρίζομεν, τούτους μηκέτι ταύταις συνοικεῖν καθ᾿ οἱονδήποτε τρόπον, ὡς ἂν ἡμῖν ἐντεῦθεν ἐντελῆ τῆς ὑποσχέσεως παρέξοιεν τὴν ἀπόδειξιν. Πρὸς τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῖς, οὐ δι᾿ ἄλλο τι, ἢ διὰ τὴν τῆς γνώμης μικροψυχίαν, καὶ τὸ τῶν ἠθῶν ἀπεξενωμένον, καὶ ἀπαγές, ἐνδεδώκαμεν.
