Prayer during rainlessness (heavy rains)1

(Read by the priest)

Sovereign Lord our God, who was zealous of old, Elijah your prophet, listened to the prayer, and even for a time was willing to withhold the rain: and now the Creator, who loves mankind, and the merciful Lord, Look down upon us, humble and unworthy servants of Your humble prayers, and as generously despise our sins, and having been implored by Your very love for mankind, give the bucket to Your inheritance, and Shine the sun on those who demand and ask for mercy from You: make glad the face of the earth of the poor for the sake of Your people, the baby and the cattle and all other living creatures, whom You satisfy with Yours with good will, and give them food for their good. Hey, Lord our God, do not deny our prayer in vain, nor disgrace us from our desires, but spare us according to Your mercy, and visit us with Your bounties: for our days are disappearing in vain, and our life becomes impoverished in illness: do not destroy us through iniquities for our sakes, for the indignation of Your wrath is brought upon you: but do with us according to Your quietness, and according to your multitude We bow down before You with a contrite soul and a humble spirit, and as a servant who is not needy, and who deserves greater punishment, we cry out to You in repentance and tenderness: sinners and transgressors, and transgressors in everything, transgressing Your commandments, and for this reason, bring about all that you have brought upon us, with truth and judgment: but not completely to corruption, famine and destruction. betray us, let a storm of water drown us: but in wrath remember mercy, and have mercy on Thy bounties for the sake of mercy, and have mercy on your creation and the work of your hands, as if they were good, and have mercy on You will quickly deliver from all evil. For You are the One who will have mercy and save us, our God, and to You we send glory, to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Psalm 68

Save me, O God, as you brought water down to my soul. The coal miner is in a time of depth, and there is no constancy. I came to the depths of the sea, and the storm drowned me. My cry has grown weary, my throat has become silent, my eyes have disappeared from my hope in my God. Having increased more than the hair of my head, those who hate me, have become stronger in my enemies, those who drive me out unjustly: even though I did not admire, then I was rewarded. God, You have taken away my madness, and my sins have not been hidden from You. Let not those who suffer You, O Lord, Lord of Hosts, be ashamed for me; let those who seek You, O God of Israel, be ashamed for me. For for Your sake I have endured reproach, and shame has covered my face. He was a stranger to my brothers, and strange to my son’s mother. For zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have attacked me. And I covered my soul with fasting, and became a reproach to me, and put my garment in sackcloth, and became a parable to them. Those who sit in the gates mock at me, and those who drink wine mock at me. But by my prayer to You, O God, time of favor, O God, in the abundance of Your mercy, hear me, in the truth of Your salvation. Save me from sinking, that I may not sink, that I may be delivered from those who hate me and from deep waters. May no storm of water drown me, may the depth below devour me, may the peer of his age speak of me with his lips. Hear me, Lord, for Thy mercy is good; according to the multitude of Thy mercies, look upon me. Do not turn Your face away from Your servant, for I am in sorrow; hear me soon. Take my soul, and deliver me, my enemy, for my sake, deliver me. For You weigh my reproach and my grief and my shame: before You are all those who insult me. My soul has longed for reproach, and I have longed for the afflicted, and have not received, and have not found, comforters. And you gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst you gave me drink. Let their table be a snare before them, and a reward, and a temptation. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and let their backs be cut off. Pour Thy wrath upon them, and let the fury of Thy wrath overtake them. Let their courtyard be empty, and let there be no living thing in their dwellings. Thou hast smote him before, thou hast driven thee away, and hast added to my disease my wounds. Add lawlessness to their lawlessness, and let them not enter into Your righteousness. Let the living be consumed from the book and not be written with the righteous. I am poor and sick: let Thy salvation, O God, receive me. I will praise the name of my God with a song, I will magnify Him in praise: and God will be more pleasing than a young calf, wearing horns and claws. Let the poor see and be glad: seek God, and your soul will live. For when the poor Lord hears and does not despise His own chains. May heaven and earth, the sea and all that live in it, praise Him. For God will save Zion, and the cities of Judah will be built, and they will inhabit it, and they will inherit it, and the seed of Your servants will restrain it, and those who love Your name will dwell in it.

Oh, saints Xenophon and Mary with your children Arkady and John! Behold, we, unworthy and sinners, diligently come running to you and with strong hope we pray: mercifully hear our voice of prayer today and strive for our help, and now your love to us, servants of God (names), show the gracious effect of your God-pleasing prayers, send us the great and rich mercy of the Lord, so that we may sing and glorify the wondrous one among the saints Your God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Brief Lives of Saints Xenophon and Mary

Wanting to give their sons, John and Arcadius, a more complete education, they sent them to the Phoenician city of Beirut. By the providence of God, the ship on which both brothers set off was wrecked. The brothers were thrown ashore by the waves in different places. Grieving over the separation, the brothers dedicated themselves to God and accepted monasticism. Parents did not receive news about their children for a long time and considered them dead. However, the Monk Xenophon, already an old man, maintained firm trust in the Lord, consoled his wife Mary, advised not to grieve and to believe that the children would be preserved by the Lord. A few years later, the couple made a pilgrimage to the Holy Places and met their sons in Jerusalem, who labored in different monasteries.
